Key takeaways
  • Google launched hotel booking inside AI Mode for English-speaking U.S. users; the hotel or booking site remains the merchant of record.
  • AWS offers retailers an Agentic Shopping Assistant based on the technology behind Alexa for Shopping.
  • AI agents choose businesses using structured, accurate data: prices, availability, policies, reviews and clear pages.
  • Businesses that keep product feeds, schema and Google Business Profile accurate will be easier for AI to recommend.

For years, search engines sent customers to your website and you did the selling. In 2026 a new step is appearing in between: AI agents that compare options and complete the purchase inside the conversation. This shift — often called agentic commerce — accelerated this summer, and it affects far more than big retailers.

What just happened

Google AI Mode now books hotels

In late August, Google introduced hotel booking in AI Mode. English-speaking users in the United States can describe the stay they want in plain language, compare hotels with photos, rates and reviews, choose a room from integrated partners and pay with Google Pay — without leaving the conversation. The hotel chain or booking site stays the merchant of record and handles customer service. Launch partners include Choice Hotels, Hilton, IHG, Marriott, Wyndham, Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Priceline and Trip.com. Google also added flight price tracking to AI Mode.

Amazon is selling its shopping agent

Amazon Web Services now offers retailers an Agentic Shopping Assistant built on the technology behind Alexa for Shopping. Retailers can customize it to their catalog, customers and brand voice and launch in weeks instead of building from scratch. Tapestry used it to create the Kate Spade AI Gift Concierge, and Amazon says conversational shopping sessions convert about 3.5 times better than traditional keyword searches.

Checkout is moving into AI answers

At Google Marketing Live, Google also described native checkout for merchants using its Universal Commerce Protocol inside Direct Offers. The direction is consistent across platforms: fewer clicks between “I need this” and “it’s paid for.”

Why this matters even if you don’t sell hotels

Travel and retail are first, but the pattern applies to any business customers compare online — restaurants, clinics, home services, B2B suppliers. An AI agent can only recommend what it can understand and trust. If your prices, hours, stock or service areas are unclear or inconsistent, the agent simply picks someone else.

In agentic commerce, your data is your storefront. Humans forgive a messy page; AI agents skip it.

Readiness checklist

1. Make your product and service data machine-readable

Online stores: keep your Google Merchant Center feed complete and current — titles, prices, availability, shipping and return policies. Add Product and Offer structured data to product pages. Service businesses: publish clear service pages with what you offer, where, and typical price ranges, plus LocalBusiness or Service schema.

2. Keep your Google Business Profile flawless

Hours, categories, services, photos and contact details must match your website exactly. Respond to reviews. AI answers lean heavily on this data for “near me” and local recommendations.

3. Clean up marketplace listings

On Amazon, Walmart and Shopify, conversational agents read listings closely. Specific attributes, honest bullet points, complete variations and quality A+ content help AI match your products to detailed requests. Our e-commerce and marketplace team handles this every day.

4. Remove friction at checkout and booking

Online booking, clear cancellation terms, guest checkout and modern payment options make you a safer choice for an agent completing a task. A fast, modern website still matters when customers click through.

5. Publish answers, not just marketing copy

FAQ sections, comparison tables and specific details (“Do you deliver to Kissimmee?”, “Is this compatible with…?”) give AI systems quotable facts. This is the core of AI search optimization.

6. Consider your own AI assistant

Tools like Amazon’s make on-site shopping agents more accessible. A well-trained assistant on your own site can answer questions, recommend products and book appointments around the clock — with clear disclosure and a path to a human, as covered in our AI transparency guide.

The bottom line

Agentic commerce rewards businesses that are easy to understand: accurate data, consistent listings and frictionless checkout. None of that is exotic — it’s good digital hygiene, now with higher stakes. Start with your feed, your profile and your top pages, and you’ll be ready as these agents reach more customers.
